School Screening Program

School Screening Program

This programme is going on under the leadership of Mr Sethuram, of Sri Vivekanda Sevashrama,Mysore. This programme is ongoing since 2005-06.

The UKEH School Screening Program is designed to detect vision problems early among school-aged children in Mysore, Mandya, Chamarajnagar, and nearby districts. Early diagnosis helps prevent long-term visual impairment, allowing children to thrive academically and socially.

Program Activities:

  • Comprehensive Vision Screening: Each screening day covers 600-1,000 students, with trained volunteers and optometrists examining children for conditions like refractive errors, amblyopia (lazy eye), congenital cataracts, and squints.
  • Provision of Corrective Eyewear: Children diagnosed with refractive errors receive free or subsidized eyeglasses to improve their vision and academic performance.
  • Referral for Advanced Care: Children who require further medical or surgical intervention are referred to UKEH, where they receive necessary care, often free of charge or at a subsidized rate

Impact:
The program has screened over 400,000 school children and provided 15,000 free spectacles. By addressing vision issues early, the program has improved educational outcomes and quality of life for countless children.
